Timber Lake Playhouse (TLP), northwestern Illinois’ professional summer theatre, announces the new musical comedy Flight of the Lawnchair Man running June 16 through 25. The musical is loosely based on the real events of 1982 when, in a quest for flight, Larry Walters attached 42 weather balloons to his lawn chair, soaring to a height of 16,000 feet. The concept, music and lyrics of this acclaimed show are by Robert Lindsey-Nassif of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The book is by Peter Ullian.
Flight of the Lawnchair Man tells the story of Jerry Gorman (TLP newcomer Grant Drager), a Walmart employee, who never let go of his boyhood dream of flying. His zany girlfriend Gracie (Sophie Brown) gives him the courage to follow his dreams. After several misadventures with flight simulators and NASA officials, he ties 400 helium-filled balloons to a Walmart lawnchair and takes off into the sky. While Gracie fends off a zealous FAA Agent (Kelsey Andres) on the ground, Jerry floats blissfully over New Jersey ever higher in the stratosphere, encountering some unexpected visitors.
Guest Director, Chuck Smith, returns for his tenth consecutive season to direct this hilarious musical adventure at Timber Lake Playhouse. A resident director at Goodman Theatre in Chicago and associate director of Legacy Productions, Smith previously directed TLP hits such as Steel Magnolias, Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Smoky Joes Café. He recently directed The Gospel According to James at Victory Gardens in Chicago and Indiana Rep in Indianapolis, and directed/produced New York’s critically acclaimed production of Knock Me A Kiss for the New Federal Theater and Legacy Productions.
